Francis Cao is a legal sociologist researching at the crossroad ofsociological jurisprudence and social theory. His research interests lie inCritical Theory’s adoption of “money” as a systemic concept, an area ofresearch that branches out more broadly into the representations of exceptionand sovereignty, imaginary, and subject.
During his training, he owes the pleasure of working with Ji Weidong andGunther Teubner and intense connection with comparativist lawyers in China andbeyond. His works have been published in Human Rights Review, Routledgehandbook series, and various top-ranking journals in Chinese academia. Leadingthe stream of money folks,he co-organizes the research network of political economy and law forLaw and Society Association (LSA) and Society for the Advancement ofSocio-Economics (SASE). He is also associated with the editor team of Journalof Law and Political Economy, Asian Journal of Law and Society.
He studied law, sociology andfinance at Peking, Penn Law and Frankfurt. As a researcher, he also professionally visitedcentre for socio-legal studies at Oxford, IGLP of Harvard Law School. In2017/2018, he held the position ofvisiting scholar at University of Pennsylvania law school.
In addition to his bachelor level of law training in China University ofPolitical Science and Law, he has proudly graduated under the supervision of He Weifang fromPeking University Law School as Master of Laws in 2014. Before joining CISLS,he deeply engaged in the promotion of rule-of-law in China and intensively written for media.
