Lynette J. Chua is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in the Jurisprudence & Social Policy program, and an LL.B. from the National University of Singapore.

She is writing a book based on in-depth, qualitative fieldwork on the gay and lesbian movement in Singapore to analyze how activists adapt mobilization strategy and tactics to their socio-political and legal conditions. She is also expanding the scope of this research into a comparative study involving Malaysia and Indonesia. In addition, she is developing a collaborative project with Assistant Professor Elaine Ho (NUS Geography) to examine how disadvantaged minority groups in Burma/Myanmar, such as LGBT persons and migrants, perceive themselves as citizens/non-citizens, and how they mobilize legal meanings and other ideas to claim public spaces or generate alternative spaces in a country that is undergoing political transition.

Further, Lynette is organizing a Workshop Initiative on Southeast Asian-based Socio-legal Research, with the long-term goal of developing NUS Law into the global center for socio-legal research on Southeast Asian societies. The first workshop, to be held on 10-12 December 2012, will bring together leading law and society scholars around the world to examine the intellectual possibilities and challenges, articulate potential research themes and directions, and define a research agenda that is bold yet feasible.

Lynette was a Fulbright Scholar, and held grants from the Social Science Research Council and the U.S. National Science Foundation.
