 Classic theory about the nature of the professions, about what distinguishes them from other occupations, has emphasized the importance of the autonomy of the professional that is, of thecontrol that he has over his work.2 The argument is quite straight forward, and it runs this way: What distinguishes professionals from other, folks is that professionals have a great deal of specialized, arcane knowledge. Because their clients usually lack this specialized knowledge, the clients are unable to evaluate or to supervise the professional's work, and that gives the professional a great deal of control in determining how to go about doing the work
