The thesis of the book is encapsulated in the Introduction:My intention is to examine here how the occupations that we call professions organized themselves to attain market power. I see professionalization as the process by which producers of special services sought to constitute and control a market for their expertise. Because marketable expertise is a crucial element in the structure of modem inequality, professionalization appears also as a collective assertion of special social status and as a collective process of upward social mobility.
