Speaker: Zhang Yongjian, Clarke Chair Professor at Cornell University


Professor Zhang Yongjian is a Clarke Chair Professor at Cornell University in the United States. Doctor of Law(J.S.D.)from New York University in the United States. He has authored more than ten specialized books in both Chinese and English, including "Economic Analysis of Law: A Methodological Primer" (Peking University Press), " Economic Analysis of Property Law " (Peking University Press), and "Legal Empirical Research: Selected Readings of English Classics" (Contemporary China Publishing House; co-edited with Tom Miles and Cheng Jinhua; to be published soon), as well as over 100 journal articles.


He has served as a visiting professor and scholar at New York University, University of Chicago, University of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, and Law School of University of Haifa in Israel. He has also conducted short-term research at the Free University of Berlin in Germany, the University of Tokyo in Japan, and the Second University of Paris in France.


His main research areas are property law and civil judicial system, and the research methods adopt both legal economic analysis and legal empirical research, with a comparative legal perspective. In recent years, the research field has expanded from property law to trust law, non-profit organization law, inheritance law, contract law, and tort law. He has jointly published research results with domestic and foreign legal scholars, economists, statisticians, and sociologists. Being equally passionate about chewing on numbers and words, the time spent understanding social sciences and integrating law is very close.


Currently serving as the co-editor in chief of the SSCI Journal of Imperial Legal Studies, and as a collaborative legal editor for the Statement of the Law Fourth, Property of the American Legal Association (ALI).
