On 11 December, Ji Weidong, Senior Professor of Liberal Arts at and Director of the China Institute for Socio-Legal Studies, Shanghai Jiao Tong University was invited to speak on the topic of "Risks, Ethics, and Due Process of Generative Artificial Intelligence" at the International Expert Workshop on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Pioneering Advances in Asia-Pacific in Macao, and to participate in the discussion on the Spring 2024 International Symposium.
In 2021, the Recommendation on the Ethical Dimensions of Artificial Intelligence was adopted unanimously at the UNESCO General Conference. Against this backdrop, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) East Asia Representative Office, the United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST), and the University of Macau collaborated to organize this expert seminar, which aims to promote a common understanding of the ethical dimensions of AI, focusing on the deployment of AI governance assessment, the impact of related scientific and technological risks on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the forward thinking on the ethical dimensions of generative AI.
The morning session was held in the Library Auditorium of the University of Macao, where the work of the UNESCO Office in East Asia and the United Nations University International Institute for Science and Technology on AI was showcased and "AI Governance for Sustainable Development: Insights and Recent Trends in Artificial Intelligence Ethics" was discussed. A number of experts and scholars from universities and institutions such as the UNESCO Office in East Asia, UNU-IIST, and the University of Macao delivered keynote speeches and engaged in in-depth discussions on related topics.
The afternoon closed-door expert meeting was held at UNU-IIST, where in-depth discussions were held on "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Sustainable Development Goals: Pioneering Research and Methodologies" and "Synergies for future collaboration". A number of experts and scholars from universities and institutions, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, the University of Macao, the National Institute of Information Technology, Chung-Ang University, Chulalongkorn University of Thailand, the National Bureau of Statistics of Indonesia, and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of Cambodia, participated in the meeting.
