Professor Ji Weidong of Shanghai Jiao Tong University received an excellent rating for a major project of the National Social Science Foundation of China

Recently, the National Office of Philosophy and Social Science was informed that the National Social Science Foundation's major project "Big Data and Modernization of Judicial System and Judicial Capacity" (17ZDA130), which was led by Ji Weidong, a senior professor of liberal arts at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the director of the China Institute of Law and Society, was awarded "Excellent".


The project team was led by Professor Ji Weidong, President of the Institute of Chinese Law and Society of the University, He Fan, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Supreme People's Court, Guo Weiqing, President of the Second Intermediate People's Court of Shanghai, Yang Li, Professor of Kaiyuan Law School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Executive Vice President of the Smart Court Institute, Cheng Jinhua, Distinguished Professor of Kaiyuan Law School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Vice President of the Institute of Chinese Law and Society, and Peng Hui, Researcher of the Institute of Law of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. Peng Hui, a researcher of the Institute of Law, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, was the sub-topic leader, while relevant experts in the field were invited to participate as core members of the research team.


Under the condition of grasping the macro background of big data and social demands, the research group examines the current construction of wisdom court in China, especially evaluates the impact of big data construction on the operation of court power, supervision and management, technical support, management theory, etc., and evaluates and summarizes the practice of big data construction in typical regional courts; on this basis, the construction of wisdom court in the background of big data era is studied from six aspects respectively. On the basis of these six aspects, the study is carried out: first, the basic theory and its development; second, the logic, cornerstones and scope of wisdom court; third, the system construction and innovation of wisdom court; fourth, wisdom court and scene application; fifth, the practice and exploration of Shanghai wisdom court; sixth, the experience reflection and future prospect of wisdom court construction. Based on the above research, the mechanism for the wisdom court to improve the trial system and enhance the trial capacity in the context of the big data era is proposed.


Since the establishment of the project, with the support of Shanghai High People's Court and Shanghai Jiaotong University Jiahua Data Center, Professor Ji Weidong has led the research team to carry out solid research, gather academic strength and expand academic influence, and achieved fruitful research results. Members of the group have completed nearly 60 research results. Among them, one research result won the first prize of the 12th Shanghai Decision-making Consulting Research Achievement Award; 10 papers were approved by provincial and ministerial leaders and adopted by relevant practical departments; 19 papers were published in Asian Journal of Law and Society, Chinese Jurisprudence, Legal Studies, Chinese and Foreign Law, Legal System and Social Development, Jurist, Tsinghua Jurisprudence, and other journals. The Journal of Chinese Law and Society, Chinese Journal of Law, Legal Studies, Chinese and Foreign Law, Legal System and Social Development, The Jurist, Tsinghua Law, Modern Law, Oriental Law, Chinese Law Review, and other CSSCI-source journals in law; 13 academic papers were published in Academic Monthly, Exploration and Controversy, Guizhou Social Science, Jiangxi Social Science, Soochow University, Fudan Journal (Philosophy and Social Science Edition), Shanghai Jiaotong University Journal (Philosophy and Social Science Edition), Soochow University (Philosophy and Social Science Edition), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Journal (Philosophy and Social Science Edition). (Social Science Edition), China Publishing, Social Science Series CSSCI source journals; 10 papers were published in the remaining journals. In addition, there are 2 academic monographs, 5 invention patents, 1 technical standard and 7 software copyrights.


This research project was awarded "Excellent", which is a reflection of the high level of scientific research strength of the expert team of China Institute of Law and Society of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in the national research projects, and also represents the academic leadership of the university in the research fields of cross-fertilization of arts and sciences, new law, judicial big data application, computational jurisprudence, artificial intelligence governance, intelligent trial and digital rule of law.
