Research Fellow
Indiana University

Jayanth Krishnan is the Charles L. Whistler Faculty Fellow and Professor of Law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. He teaches courses in property, comparative law, and immigration. In 2012, he received the Indiana University Trustees' Teaching Award.

Krishnan's academic research focuses on the legal profession, the behavior of lawyers, law-and-globalization, and legal education, with a special emphasis on how these areas intersect in India. He has written extensively on these subjects and his work has appeared in both highly reputed law reviews and peer-reviewed journals.

Krishnan serves as the head of the India Initiative at Indiana Law's Center on the Global Legal Profession. In that role, he oversees an internship program that places students in various legal practice settings in India, including in law firms, non-governmental organizations, and government offices. He also serves as the Law School's representative to the O.P. Jindal Global University (in Haryana, India), which has recently partnered with Indiana University on multiple fronts. Further, Krishnan has received several grants to conduct his scholarship on Indian law and society. Most recently, beginning in 2010, he was named Project Director of a three-year, quarter of million dollar-plus Ford Foundation grant, where he and a team of researchers in India are empirically examining the responsiveness of the Indian lower courts to claimant grievances. Krishnan is also co-director of the Law School's Center for Law, Society, and Culture.

In addition to having a law degree from Ohio State University, Krishnan holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to coming to Bloomington, Krishnan was a Professor of Law at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he received the Teacher of the Year award for the 2003-2004 academic year. He has also served as a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Iowa's College of Law, as the British Academy Visiting Professor at the Centre for South Asian Studies at the University of Edinburgh, and as a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University's College of Law.
